Life: Baking’s Easy! Right?

So yesterday I called my cousin over and we baked. I really like baking, and I’ve been wanted to do it since ages ago. And I managed to get my cousin to bake with me, because she wanted to make butterfly cakes. So we agreed to make that. We set a date and then went to go and by the ingredients. Laid everything out on the table and started. baking, mixing everything in, following the recipe. Then we game to melting the chocolate. Right how do you melt chocolate? You put it in the microwave right? Well, that’s what I thought, watching people do it on the TV, well that’s what I saw on cbeebies, but it turns out that they’re wrong! Because we were doing the completely wrong thing, turns out that we needed to put the chocolate in the cup and in a pot of boiling water. It did NOT mention that we had to do all of that, in the cook book. And well my mum helped us with that. But then after that, everything went smoothly, we got the mixture all over us, when using the mixture but it was fun. And well, we put it in the oven for half and hour, and it didn’t rise like it should have, so we tried, to make it look like the picture, didn’t turn out so good. So we made a new creation, evil smiley’s! Yeah we thought that we’d do something a little like our own. And we did it, and it was way better than the butterfly cakes. Yeah, we rocked it and it was so cool, we made a lemon icing to put and it was so cool! I had the best time ever yesterday, I learnt how to make something new and tried it out. I think that we made a great effort. I mean that, if you make them for the first time and they’re edible then that’s fine, it’ll get better every time you bake it. Because you’ll know what to do and, it won’t be a total surprise. And we hope that, it actually turns out like the picture.

We also found out that cakes in the picture never turn out like that in real life. Unless you’re making shortbread, which has no difficulty at all, plus no actual design to it.

So if you want to try and make your own butterfly cakes then here’s a nice simple recipe for you, to try out, if you like!

    (may need 5 mins extra)

  • Total time: 40 mins
  • Skill level: Easy peasy
  • Costs: Cheap as chips

    Ingredients:

    For the buns:

    • 100g (4oz) caster sugar
    • 100g (4oz) butter, softened
    • 2 large eggs
    • 100g (4oz) self-raising flour
    • ½ tsp baking powder
    • 15ml (1tbsp) milk

    For the buttercream:

    • 50g (2oz) butter, softened
    • 75g (3oz) icing sugar
    • 2tbsp strawberry jam
    • Icing sugar, for dusting

Right so here are the steps, make sure that you don’t skip them, otherwise things won’t turn out all so good.

    Method:

    1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F, gas mark 5). Line a muffin tray with 10 paper muffin cases.
    2. Place the sugar, butter, eggs, flour, baking powder and milk in a large bowl and mix with an electric whisk until pale and creamy.
    3. Divide the mixture between the muffin cases and bake for 15-20 mins until risen, golden and firm to the touch. Transfer to a cooling rack. Leave to cool.
    4. To make the buttercream, place the butter in a bowl and sift over the icing sugar. Beat until smooth.
    5. Slice the tops off each cake and fill the cavities with a little buttercream and jam. Cut each sliced top in half and arrange on top of the filling to resemble butterfly wings. Dust lightly with icing sugar.

Psst! Want to get the kids involved? There’s also this  step-by-step picture guide to butterfly buns if you need the extra help, but I’m sure that you’ll all do fine.

So please do try and and ace your cupcakes! And see what you can do if they don’t turn out like they do in the picture.
