Despite the tumour-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.
“Damn near genius… Simply devastating… Fearless in the face of powerful, uncomplicated, unironized emotion.” Times
This book. This amazingly, beautifully structured, heart-felt, humour full of a book. I cannot fathom how amazingly good this book was to read. As you can probably tell it’s going to take a while before I finally get over this book, I don’t think I ever will if I’m being honest. I’ve never seen a book so well written and that has given all these different interpretations on things you wouldn’t think of. One thing that had disappointed me was that the book was so good that I was sad it wasn’t based on a true story, and maybe if it had been it’ll just go to show how some people can be lucky. But of course the world is not a “Wish granting factory”. John Green had taken a simple story and has made it amazingly complex in the most simple way, if that makes sense? This book has been filled with simple statements that have a deeper meaning to them, taken and looked at from a different perspective. I finished the book at about midnight last night, I couldn’t stop reading it, tears will not stop flowing eight chapters before the end, and I can’t help myself from quoting the book a number of times. Right now I feel as if I’m Hazel herself writing to Peter Van Houten about An Imperial Affliction, but obviously I’m not Hazel, just Azraa and I’m writing to what seems like a very down to earth John Green, if he ever reads this that is.
We all know the main plot of the story. Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters, two very different people, who entangle their lives with each others and become entwined together, creating a beautiful, unforgettable love story, about how happiness and love can happen even when death is nearing closer to you every day. Their love is completely and utterly unique, something special, seen in a different light, something that cannot be misinterpreted as something else. This book shows the themes of love, happiness, friendship, strength and that we are all different some way and somehow, you can’t help how you feel and therefore you should just accept it and let it run free. That’s shown boldly by Hazel and Augustus’s feelings for each other.
I’m sorry but can we take a moment to just take in Gus Waters please. Like he is the definition of the most beautiful boy ever. I want to just marry the boy. I love his charismatic self, so witty and full of humour. I think that if a man were to exist like Gus Waters, he’d have to be that miricle walking angel on Earth. He was the sole purpose of the making of Hazel’s happiness and I don’t think anyone could have succeeded better at it.
Let’s not forget about Isaac! He is also another cutie from the book, who get’s his heart broken by a girl because he became blind to save his own life. Isaac plays an important role by being the glue that helps stick Hazel and Gus together. Gus and Isaac’s friendship was something, and Gus had definitely meant a lot to Isaac. We learn this from the quote at the bottom.
John Green you are an absolute genius; one hell of one amazing writer, I don’t think you understand how much I love you right now, for making a fictional book so beautiful, I hope to one day be able to write as great as you, so very very inspirational. You certainly deserve a lot of bouquets for this piece. Absolutely, exceptionally, brilliant. Safe to say that I am forever in love with your book. One question, how long is it before Hazel dies? Oh and, did you ever meet Peter Van Houten? These are the questions pondering my mind 24/7…
I cannot wait for the film to be released in June, but like I said before read the book before the film comes out, it’s worth the read. I have no doubt that Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort won’t play them role right, I’ve watched the trailer thousands of times (cried every time) and I honestly think that they are the most perfect fit in a wonderous puzzle. Thank you God for giving such a cast. I had even secretly hoped that they’d be a sequel but I realised that that can’t happen… Disappointment washed over me.
What You Wanted – One Republic – Trailer song that fits in with all things The Fault In Our Stars.
There are a few (a lot) of quotes that I just love from this book and I’m willing to share them:
Thank you for reading, I hoped that you enjoyed this post, I enjoyed writing and feeling the memories of the book again and again.
